Who We Are

In the early years of their practice, Nova Legal founders Candace Smith and John Adams saw how overwhelming tax and business law could be for Colorado entrepreneurs. Working with clients across the state, they noticed that legal complexities—especially around compliance, entity formation, and tax planning—often pulled business owners away from their core work and long-term vision.

Candace Smith, Esq.
Founding Partner, Nova Legal P.C.
Candace Smith is a founding partner of Nova Legal, P.C., where she focuses her practice on business formation, tax planning, and regulatory compliance for startups and growing companies across Colorado. Known for her clear communication and strategic approach, Candace helps entrepreneurs navigate complex legal challenges with confidence.

Candace earned her J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School and holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Denver. She was named a Rising Star by Super Lawyers in 2023 and recognized as one of Colorado’s Top Business Attorneys Under 40 by 5280 Magazine.

Before founding Nova Legal, Candace worked at a leading regional firm where she advised clients on corporate transactions and tax matters. She brings a practical, solutions-first mindset to every engagement, partnering closely with clients to align legal strategy with business goals.

Outside of the office, Candace is active in the Colorado Women’s Bar Association and regularly volunteers her time with local small business clinics.


John Adams, Esq.

John Adams is a founding partner at Nova Legal, P.C., where he focuses on business law, tax strategy, and transactional counsel for entrepreneurs and established companies throughout Colorado. With a reputation for precision and practicality, John helps clients structure, scale, and protect their businesses with confidence.

He earned his J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School and holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation from the University of Denver. John was recognized in Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in 2023 and has been a featured speaker on business tax issues for the Colorado Bar Association.

Before co-founding Nova Legal, John worked as in-house counsel for a national financial services firm and as an associate at a boutique tax firm. His combined legal and financial background allows him to offer forward-thinking guidance across entity structuring, tax compliance, mergers, and asset protection.

John is a member of the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation and serves as a mentor to law students interested in business and tax law.
